During the course you will learn how to engrave a plate and then print it in the press, which will be the souvenir of your stay in Scicli.<\/span><\/p>

SHORT COURSE FOR ENGRAVING AND PRINTING OF A DRYPOINT PLATE<\/strong><\/span>

The short course concentrated in a single 5-hour lesson provides the initial approach to engraving and art printing, focusing on the drypoint technique, tackling the discipline starting from the basics.<\/span>

LESSON PROGRAM:<\/strong><\/span>
- What does cable engraving mean, historical notes<\/span>
- How to prepare a matrix: chamfering, polishing the matrix with abrasive papers<\/span>
- Preparation of sketch and transfer on plate<\/span>
- Beginning of the direct phase of engraving \/ Testing of signs and textures and printing tests<\/span>
- Black and white and color inking phase<\/span>
- Printing tests with chalcographic press<\/span>
- Print of some archival copies<\/span>
- Explanation of the drying phase, numbering and signature of the specimens<\/span><\/p>

DEEPENING ON THE TECHNIQUE:<\/span>
Drypoint is an engraving technique of cable printing (Direct Technique): initially the term indicated the steel tool, but later it also extended to the matrices and especially to the prints themselves.<\/span>
The matrix is \u200b\u200bdirectly engraved with a hard and sharp metal tip.<\/span>
The tip, scratching the metal surface, creates a groove on the edges of which it raises the filaments, called barbs, which further retain the ink giving a characteristic velvety mark to the print. One of the most characteristic aspects of drypoint is precisely the unmistakable nature of its mark, both for the presence of the beards and the blackish and suffused halo in the first runs, and for the course of the stroke, often irregular in size and direction.<\/span>
Since the pressure of the printing press quickly destroys the beards and their effect, the drypoint is only suitable for limited runs.<\/span>
Originally, drypoint was used to finish burin engravings, but since the fifteenth century it was also used independently, especially in the Nordic environment. Remarkable results were obtained by the Dutch engravers, first of all Rembrandt.<\/span>
